Furaha means joy.
Furaha Uganda
For our heart rejoices in Him,
Because we trust in His holy name.
Psalm 33:21
Our Passion.
Our passion are children. The way children approach life, their simplicity, and their faith serve as an example for every adult. There is much we can learn from children. However, children also need care. Many of our wards don’t have parents or have only one parent. All the children are affected by poverty. They lack enough food, space, and opportunities for development, learning, or even clothing. We strive to provide all these for our children, starting from the most basic needs like food and water, to medical insurance and medications, and extending to play, education, and overall development.
It’s all about kids. It has always been. We give them our hands and hearts to build a better tomorrow and make a difference in this world.
Furaha.
Furaha Uganda was founded by two energetic and enthusiastic young men, Daniel and Gabriel, in 2021. Their main goal was to bring joy and meet the daily needs of children in Uganda. Daniel, originally from Poland, now resides in the Netherlands, while Gabriel, a native of Uganda, is actively present at the mission site in Bugiri every day. Both Daniel and Gabriel are followers of Jesus.
In Swahili, Furaha means joy. We aim to spread and share this simple and childlike joy with the children who need it the most. Bringing joy not only benefits others but also brings joy to oneself. With a smile on your face, you too can help others.
Our Goal.
If we were to describe our goal with one dream, it would be a boarding school. A school where children could receive education for free, and meals would be provided. A place where children can go to sleep safely, without fear of an uncertain tomorrow. Our aim is to create a space where kids become independent adults who work and care for themselves, their families, and their future homes.
This goal seems to be much beyond our current capabilities and actions. Nevertheless, we believe that the Lord will give us the opportunity to realize this dream and build a secure place that would be a home and school for many, many children.
Gabriel Onder
Introduction.
Sure. My name is Gabriel Onder. I was born and raised in Bugiri, Uganda and I’m 22 years old. I love to help other people which gives me a lot of joy. I am a Christian and belong to the local Pentecostal church here.
What do you do in the week?
During the week, I work in the market selling vegetables along with my mom. I also strive to be active on social media and maintain contact with my friends from around the world. I also take care of myself and the people in my environment.
Can you elaborate more on your lifestyle?
Yes, I manage to take care of myself but what I look for is not the help for me, but for the children we take care of. I have been renting a building since August 2022, which serves as a community center where 30 children sleep. Thirteen of them are completely orphaned, and the rest come from extreme poverty. I would love to provide them with the opportunity to receive an education. It’s crucial for them to gain independence as adults, enabling them to work and take care of their homes and families.
So, you are working to support these children?
Yes, I try to devote my time to them and seek support from the developed world as it’s difficult to earn enough to support so many children on my own.
How about your personal interests?
In my free time, I like to play volleyball. I am really good at it. But I also enjoy cooking. The kids gather around me and learn how to cook when I prepare meals for them. For the past few months, I’ve been working on improving my photography skills. It’s enjoyable to capture precious moments from life.
What is your ultimate dream?
My dream is to make Uganda self-sufficient, so that the majority of people receive education and are capable of independently earning money and supporting their families. I dream that everyone can stand on their own feet and maturely strive for a better tomorrow.
Since when have you started being active online?
I have been active online since 2022, making friends and sharing my story and the needs of the children. Over time, I have worked hard on social media, creating a lot of photos and videos, and have received tips and guidance on how to expand my horizons. I have met many people from America and Europe who have shown great support for my mission and children.
Any significant achievements to share?
Of course, thanks to the online support, our foundation Furaha Uganda was established in 2024. Furaha means joy, for joy best describes the volunteer work that I do. Despite the poverty and tragedies in our children’s lives, they radiate the greatest joy and empathy.
Short last word?
The joy I get from helping the children is immense. I am filled with happiness every time I can develop a large project. For example, the purchase of new shoes for everyone brings me so much joy. I can say that I act as a mediator between you guys and the children. I get to share photos and videos with you, and you all also experience immense joy. Everything revolves around the joy of helping the children. Furaha!
